Walking on the Charles River was a humbling experience for me, especially given my (terrible) self-absorbedness. For the first time, I felt exceptionally isolated, and the vastness of the river revealed my insignificance. Every step away from the banks only increased the distance from the security of solid ground, and I could only imagine the view from the third-person point of view — that I am no more than a speck on this massive expanse of ice. I felt small, and from that perspective, I realized my true scale in the greater scheme of things.

The wind blew unrelentingly, picking up the snow from the surface which numbed my face. A misstep could mean worse: only one could imagine the agony of falling into freezing water.

Perhaps I’m slightly crazy to even think of going out there. Sure, it’s nothing spectacular, really, but damn, the view was nice out there.
